East Suffolk alumni give scholarships

The East Suffolk High School Alumni Association has awarded scholarships to four recent graduates from the Suffolk Public Schools and two from other localities, who are alumni descendents.

The ESHSAA scholarships are funded by the alumni, supporters and friends of the Alumni Association. Two of the graduates received the Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarship, which is funded through donations from the late Joyce A. Artis. She was a 1966 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.

The ESHSA Association scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to the following students:

  • Imani S. Ireland, who graduated from Nansemond River High School with a 3.3 GPA. She is attending Liberty University.
  • Christoff J. Glaude, who graduated from Boston Arts Academy with a 3.3 GPA. He is attending Berklee College of Music.
  • Alexis S. Knight, who graduated from Lakeland High School with a 3.4 GPA. She is attending Norfolk State University.
  • Chinaza E. Nnawulezi, who graduated from King’s Fork High School with a 3.6 GPA. She is attending Hampton University.

The Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarships, $1,500 each, were awarded to the following students:

  • Alandra Nicole Copeland, who graduated from King’s Fork High School with a 3.3 GPA. She is attending Old Dominion University.
  • Mikayla G. Mitchell, who graduated from Allen D. Nease High School with a 3.7 GPA. She is attending the University of Central Florida.

Each recipient demonstrated merit through academic achievement, an essay and school, community and church activities. The 2016-2017 scholarship applications will be available in each school’s guidance office and the East Suffolk Recreation Center by February 2016.
