Head downtown Sunday

Published 6:17 pm Saturday, November 14, 2015

There’s no reason not to head downtown this Sunday to check out the happenings.

It will be 60 degrees and sunny, with absolutely no chance of rain, so get out your walking shoes — and maybe a sweater — and head to the intersection of Main and Washington streets. That’s the epicenter of some exciting happenings.

First, Suffolk Restaurant Week is in its last day Sunday. You’ll find six of the 15 participating restaurants within easy walking distance of that intersection. If you’re craving pizza, pasta, tacos, classy Southern, barbecue or burgers, you’ll find it there.

Once you take in some calories, it will be easy to burn them off walking to all of the different retailers who are participating in (Re)Stored, the partnership between the Retail Alliance and the Suffolk Department of Economic Development.

Nearly 30 participating merchants — see the story on the front page — reported lots of shoppers and good energy and excitement at seeing some vacant retail spaces, some of which have been vacant for several years, open and doing business again. You’re sure to find something in the shops that you need or want. Bring your plastic or plenty of cash. There are plenty of great gift ideas, too — you might even be able to sleep in on Black Friday this year. And with so many shoppers, you’ll probably run into an old friend or meet a new one. And don’t forget to discover a few of the businesses that already operate downtown — there’s no reason they shouldn’t benefit, too.

Shopping at (Re)Stored will be a great way to support and encourage local businesses from the greater Hampton Roads area, some of whom might find the business climate and hospitality so much to their liking that they eventually come to stay. Others might be so encouraged by the energy that they fill those vacant buildings. All of these things will improve Suffolk’s bottom line.

So head downtown today, and everybody wins.
