King’s Fork High School sophomore point guard Camary Harris and the Lady Bulldogs will face I.C. Norcom High School on Saturday at 4 p.m. during the 2015 King’s Fork Basketball Showcase.

Boys’ and girls’ high school basketball talent will flock to King’s Fork High School on Saturday to compete in the 2015 King’s Fork Basketball Showcase.

The event, serving as a fundraiser for the Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team, will feature 12 teams from around the area, including the Lady Bulldogs themselves.

Boys’ teams participating will hail from Booker T. Washington High School, Denbigh High School, Frank W. Cox High School, Grafton High School, Granby High School, Phoebus High School, Princess Anne High School and Woodrow Wilson High School.

Girls’ teams playing include those from Grafton, Granby, I.C. Norcom High School and King’s Fork.

King’s Fork activities director Randy Jessee noted that putting the showcase together has become a challenge.

With so many high school basketball events going on at big venues now, “it’s actually becoming increasingly hard to get teams,” he said.

But despite the difficulties, “I think we’ve got some pretty good matchups going this time,” he said.

Jessee highlighted the contest between Norcom and the Lady Bulldogs, set for a 4 p.m. tip-off. The home team entered Thursday night’s road game against Great Bridge High School with a 3-0 record on the season.

“They beat a very good Western Branch (High School) team the other night,” Jessee said, referring to King’s Fork’s 67-64 victory on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs will be playing in their fourth game of the week on Saturday after also visiting Lakeland High School on Friday, and their coach, Maurice Fofana, said he wants to see his team demonstrate chemistry against Norcom.

“I just want that team bonding, you have that chemistry down, so January we’ll be able to be clicking on all cylinders,” he said.

The coach has said the Lady Bulldogs feature talent and balance this year that should make them state title contenders.

Looking at some of the other games on the slate for Saturday, Jessee said, “I think Princess Anne-Phoebus is going to be an exceptionally good game,” while a local connection adds interest to the game pitting Wilson against Denbigh.

Grafton’s and Granby’s girls’ teams will face off to open the showcase at 1 p.m., and the two schools’ boys’ teams will face off at 8:30 p.m. to close the event.

Jessee pointed to the boys’ matchup as being particularly intriguing because of how their play varies, and added, “I think Booker T. and Cox will be a kind of interesting matchup, too, because they play two different styles.”

Notably absent from the showcase schedule is King’s Fork’s boys’ team, which Jessee said was due to a scheduling issue, but the Bulldogs will be back for another King’s Fork showcase set for Jan. 16.

The cost of admission on Saturday will be $8 for all ages, and doors will open at noon.
