The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy girls’ swim team defeating Cape Henry Collegiate School 70-61 and senior David Forman of the NSA boys’ team winning the boys’ 100-yard butterfly were highlights during the Nansemond-Suffolk swimming program’s first meet of the 2015-16 season.
In addition to their win, the Lady Saints fell 76-69 to visiting Norfolk Christian School, 80-64 to visiting Walsingham Academy and 93-46 to Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School.
The Saints lost 113-35 to the Dolphins, 85-38 to the Ambassadors, 99-33 to the Trojans and 100-27 to the Crusaders.
“I thought they did well,” NSA assistant coach Kim Wagner said of her Saints and Lady Saints swimmers. “We are a small team this year. We have 11 sixth- or seventh-graders, and a total of only 21 kids, so that’s more sixth- and seventh-graders than varsity, really.”
The sixth- and seventh-grader are junior varsity swimmers, but they can also swim in exhibition heats in varsity meets.
“We were very happy because our 400(-yard) free(style) relay of our girls qualified for the state meet, and that’s awesome for the first meet,” Wagner said. “And David Forman, one of our two seniors, qualified for the 200 free for the state meet, and that was great, too.”
The girls’ 400 free relay, which took second with a time of 4:29.06, featured sophomore Tori Psimas, sophomore Madi Wilson, freshman Grace Rowell and eighth-grader Danae Martin.
Forman finished the 200 free in third with a time of 1:56.56 and won the boys’ 100 fly with a time of 1:01.90, a few seconds ahead of Walsingham junior Cavan Sullivan, who finished with a time of 1:05.77.
The Nansemond-Suffolk boys’ team had only three scoring swimmers on the day, but Wagner said that she was unsure of why participation in swimming has dropped at the school.
Nevertheless, “though we were low in numbers, I think for our first meet, we did very well,” she said.
