Elizabeth Horton Umphlett

Elizabeth Horton Umphlett passed away on Dec. 19, 2015, in Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation — Nansemond Pointe. Born on Sept. 22, 1920, in Nansemond County, Mrs. Umphlett was the daughter of the late William Lloyd Horton and Edna Haslett Horton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Joseph Umphlett; her sister, Margaret H. Franklin; and her brothers, Hugh R. Horton, Thornton H. Horton, William F. Horton and Wayland E. Horton. A long time member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church, Mrs. Umphlett taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Whaleyville Chapter No. 137, where she was Past Worthy Matron and received a 50-year pin for her years of dedicated service. Throughout her life, Mrs. Umphlett enjoyed sharing with her family and friends her love of playing basketball at Whaleyville High School and Chowan College. In later years, she especially enjoyed watching ACC basketball games with her family. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mrs. Umphlett cherished her family.

Mrs. Umphlett is survived by her loving daughter, Judy Umphlett Horton and her husband, Dillard H. Horton Jr., of Suffolk; her granddaughters, Michelle J. Horton, of Suffolk, and Carla H. Schroeder and husband, Mark R. Schroeder; and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth M. Schroeder and Ellie M. Schroeder, of High Point, N.C.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nursing staff at Nansemond Pointe, where she received excellent care, and to her dear friend and caregiver, Elizabeth Peele. A celebration of Mrs. Umphlett’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 22, 2015, at Parr Funeral Home, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, with Pastor Jack Meservey and the Rev. Myrtle F. Hatcher officiating. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Whaleyville United Methodist Church, 6312 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23438.
