Leon N. Patton Sr., 80, of Suffolk, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 17, 2015, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C., following a brief illness.

Leon was born April 12, 1935, in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the late Hattie Frazier and Nehemiah Patton. He was the third oldest of six children. On April 15, 1960, he married Loretta Ann Hooper, who survives.

Leon attended Saint Augustine’s College, Raleigh, N.C., graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics.

He served in the U.S. Army in the 1950s. His professional career was with the Suffolk Public Schools. He was a mathematics teacher, assistant principal and, after 32 years, retired as an assistant superintendent in 1991.

Mr. Patton was a lifetime member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Alpha Iota Chapter.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Leon Jr. and Sherry Patton; grandchildren, Leon III, Kyle, and Tori Patton, of Fort Washington, Md.; sisters, Mae King, Jacqueline Douthit, and Patricia Careathers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brother, Wilbert (Jung) Patton of Tampa, Fla.; other relatives and friends.

Mr. Patton was preceded in death by his son, Antonio Dewayne, and his brother, Edward Patton.

Funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at East End Baptist Church, Suffolk. Interment will take place at Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home.
