Cookie time for Girl Scouts

It’s time for that sweet bread-and-butter of Girl Scouts: cookies.

On Saturday, more than 600 Girl Scouts from across Suffolk will join others from around the country pounding the pavement and going door to door taking cookie orders. Girls will be asking neighbors, family friends and relatives for orders, with deliveries to begin on Feb. 19.

Cookie sales are the chief fundraiser for Suffolk’s nearly 30 Girl Scout troops, generating money to fund service projects, award ceremonies and trips for troops, Girl Scout leader Dina Crewe said. She leads troops 4313 and 4312, both in North Suffolk.

This year’s sweet menu is full of favorites: Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles, Rah-Rah Raisins and Toffee-tastic.

With the exception of Toffee-tastic, all cookies are $4 per box. Those are $5 per box and are the only gluten-free option.

Booth sales will run from Feb. 20 to March 20, with girls setting up shop outside local Walmarts and other retailers to sell their cookies.

For the first time, local Girl Scouts have the option to allow customers at booths to buy using credit cards. Adult volunteers will handle the transactions, with money going directly into the troop’s account.
