Snow coming Friday

A winter storm moving across the country won’t bring as much snow to Suffolk as to areas farther west, but it will still complicate the Friday morning rush hour, according to the National Weather Service.

“The biggest concern would be for the Friday morning commute,” said meteorologist Mike Montefusco with the National Weather Service Wakefield. “The roads being slippery can be expected.”

Montefusco was loathe to predict amounts of snow that might result from the storm, which spent Monday and Tuesday dumping several inches as it made its way across the country.

“It’s still a bit early to get into exact amounts at this time,” Montefusco said.

He said the storm will begin as light snow late Thursday night into Friday morning. On Friday, it will transition to sleet and then rain by midday, then back to snow on Saturday into Saturday evening.

“The morning rush hour on Friday will likely not be the prettiest thing in the world,” he said. “We do expect driving conditions will improve for the later-day rush hour on Friday evening.”

Montefusco said the early snow will stick, thanks to the cold, dry air that has permeated the area this week. But looking at the storm as a whole, the majority of it in this area should be rain, he said.

In addition, gusty winds Friday night and Saturday will accompany the end of the storm as it moves offshore.

The National Weather Service website predicts a small amount of snow Wednesday night, as well. On Friday, between a quarter-inch and half-inch of precipitation is expected, the website states.

Relief comes Sunday, at least in the form of sun. The high is expected to be near 42.

Monday and Tuesday also will see some sun, with highs near 50 and 54, respectively.
