The Suffolk Ruritan Club and Suffolk Elks Lodge are raising money to get an all-terrain wheelchair for a wounded veteran.

“We’re trying to raise up some money to buy a TrackChair and donate it during the event,” said E.C. Harris of the Suffolk Ruritan Club.

The two clubs collaborate annually on a veterans appreciation event, which provides a day of fun, food and prizes for local veterans. It’s set for May 14 this year.

“We need money to put the event on,” Harris said. “And we’re going to need to come up with about $13,000 for the TrackChair itself.”

The TrackChair website says its product makes mobility easier for wheelchair users. It allows them to navigate surfaces including woods, campgrounds, beaches and hiking trails.

“They can go hunting or fishing,” Harris said. “They can go in the backyard and play with their kids.”

Harris said the club is about one-third of the way toward being able to purchase the chair, thanks to the Suffolk Rods and Muscle Cars Club, which donated $4,700, the proceeds from a car show fundraiser.

He said the club also is sending donation requests to every Ruritan Club and Elks Lodge in the state but is looking for local support as well.

To donate for the track chair or the event, send a check to Suffolk Ruritan Club, P.O. Box 667, Suffolk, VA 23439. Put “track chair” or “veterans appreciation” in the memo line.
