Kevon Cornell Hawkins now faces charges in three commercial robberies and a residential burglary, all of which took place in the week prior to the incident at the motel, as well as charges stemming from the motel incident.

After police developed Hawkins as a suspect in two of the robberies, the search for him led police to the Super 8 Motel on Jan. 12. They were told he was possibly staying at a hotel in the downtown area with an adult female acquaintance, according to a press release from that day.

Officers began checking downtown hotels that day and found the female acquaintance was a registered guest at the Super 8 Motel in the 600 block of North Main Street.

Several officers approached the door of the room where the woman was registered, knocked once and got no response, according to a Jan. 12 press release. They knocked again and then “heard what sounded like a round being chambered into a firearm,” the press release stated.

The SWAT team was called to the scene about 9:49 a.m.

The female eventually came out of the room uninjured. Shortly after, officers heard several gunshots fired from within the room.

Shortly thereafter, Hawkins, the only other occupant of the room, opened the door, crawled out and was taken into custody, Klink stated. He had at least one self-inflicted gunshot wound underneath his chin, and a firearm was located within the room. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.

According to a press release this Friday, Hawkins now is charged in four incidents, as well as the motel incident:

  • A residential burglary Jan. 5 in the 300 block of Goodman Street
  • An armed robbery at the Family Dollar in the 800 block of West Constance Road on Jan. 7
  • An armed robbery at the Chuckatuck 7-Eleven on Jan. 10
  • An armed robbery at the Neighborhood Supermarket in the 100 block of Wellons Street on Jan. 11, during which a weapon was discharged

Hawkins faces charges including three counts of possessing a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of use or display of a firearm in commission of a felony, three counts of wearing a mask in public, three counts of robbery, and one count each of receiving a stolen firearm, grand larceny, break and enter with intent to commit a felony, discharge firearm in an occupied building, felonious assault, obstructing justice and resisting lawful arrest.
