Murdly C. Hicks, 73, of 400 Word Terrace, Suffolk, transitioned Thursday, Jan. 29, 2016, at Bon Secours Maryview Nursing Center. She was a native of Newland Township, N.C., and the daughter of the late Curtis Jarvis Moore and Hattie Freeman Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin R. Hicks Sr.; one sister, Marion Leak; two brothers, Curtis J. Moore and Levi Moore.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Elizabeth City State University and a master’s degree from Norfolk State University. She retired from Suffolk Public Schools after 33 years in 1999. She was a member of East End Baptist Church. Murdly was a member of the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star No. 115, Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast (leader for girls in the housing developments), Virginia Education Association, Reading Council and Guidance Council.

She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Melba Holland (William), of Suffolk; one son, Calvin Hicks (Dina), of Reston; six grandchildren, Megan Thorne, Monique Holland, Cydnei Hicks, Carlisle Hicks, Celina Hicks and Adrian Paltoo; two great-grandchildren, Rosemary and Reginald IV; one sister, Ina L. Barnes, of South Orange, N.J.; one brother, Quindell Moore, of Suffolk; three sisters-in-law, Peggy Moore, Mary Hankerson and Carrie Scott; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at East End Baptist Church. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Park — Tidewater Veterans Memorial Gardens, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends at 6425 Olde Bullocks Circle, Suffolk. The Delta Omega Service will be held at Crocker Funeral Home at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016.
