New conference, no problem.

The Nansemond River High School girls’ indoor track and field team followed up its back-to-back Ironclad Conference championships with its first PenSouth Conference championship on Thursday at the Boo William Sportsplex in Hampton.

The Lady Warriors had developed quite a rivalry with Phoebus High School the past two years, which helped push them when the conference title was on the line.

“This year, with us being with all-new teams, I was kind of curious to see how we would respond, but I was excited,” Nansemond River track and field coach Justin Byron said. “I was excited to see the kids really step up to the occasion.”

The Lady Warriors defeated their nearest opponent, Menchville High School, 183-91, and produced six winners in individual events.

Nansemond River’s boys’ team placed sixth out of seven teams, scoring 36 points, and featured one winner in individual events.

The 2015-16 season has been one in which the Lady Warriors have had to press on since the graduation of standouts like Zakiya Rashid, Kara Lyles, Courtney James and Candice James.

Incredibly, the team is deeper than ever, with four freshmen that have produced state-qualifying marks.

During Thursday’s conference championships, senior Brandeé Johnson, senior Dajae’ Goulet and junior Syaira Richardson did not run.

“That is the definition of depth when you can sit your top athletes and still be victorious,” Byron said.

Freshman Sarah Rhiel, who starred for the Nansemond River field hockey team in the fall, won two events. She took first place in the girls’ 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:11.89, and she finished first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:13.84.

Also among the long distance runners, junior Christina Banks produced a personal record time in the 1,600-meter run, finishing in five minutes and 46.94 seconds, good for third. Junior Casey Williams qualified for regionals in the 1,600 and the 1,000.

Byron noted that sophomore Asia Crocker has been struggling with some injuries, but she had a successful day. She won the high jump with a 5-foot-2-inch state-qualifying leap, she qualified for states in the 300-meter dash, taking second with a 42.02-second time, and she qualified for regionals in the 55-meter dash, taking third with a 7.42-second time.

Senior Amirah Jones won the 500-meter dash with a state-qualifying time of one minute and 20.08 seconds.

Senior Monae Bynum was victorious in the triple jump, producing a 33-foot-9.50-inch mark.

Freshman Tre’breh Scott-McKoy led a group of four Lady Warriors among the top five finishers of the 55-meter hurdles, winning by finishing in 8.42 seconds, a state-qualifying time.

Her teammates in the top five included sophomore Skylar Parks in third (8.52 seconds), senior Kiara Price in fourth (8.54 seconds) and junior Jasmine Watson in fifth (8.63 seconds). All of their times beat the state-qualifying standard of 8.90 seconds.

“I liked Kiara Howard’s performance,” Byron said. “Kiara Howard qualified for states in the 300 and regionals in the 55.”

Howard, a junior, took fourth in the 300 with a time of 42.13 seconds, and she placed sixth in the 55 with a time of 7.51 seconds.

While senior Camryn Hawkins of Hampton High School won the 300, Nansemond River dominated the top 10, with six representatives. Bynum placed second with a state-qualifying 7.37-second time, while Crocker, freshman Kori Carter and freshman Brene’ Donaldson qualified for regionals in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively. Junior Anaya Monroe took eighth.

For Nansemond River’s boys, senior Kevin Tohak won the 1,000-meter run, finishing in two minutes and 41.64 seconds, a new personal record for him. He also took third in the 1,600-meter run with a 4:55.43 time.

Senior Nicholas Gill qualified for regionals in the 1,000 and the 1,600.

He was also part of the 4×800-meter relay team that qualified for regionals by placing third (9:24.99). He was joined on the team by seniors Jarrin Shinard, Adriece Sharpe and Nick Viado.

Sophomore Daiqwaun Faircloth made the regional cut in the long jump with a 20-foot-5.75-inch leap to put him in fourth, and junior Tyrese Ellis made it to regionals in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:09.90 that put him in fifth.
