To the editor:

Everyone knows how tasty Girl Scout Cookies are. But there’s a lot more to Girl Scout Cookies than what’s in the box.

Girl Scouts who sell cookies learn important skills along the way — goal-setting, money management, people skills and more.

Members of Troop 330 heard about the ForKids organization in Norfolk and used cookie money to make snack baskets that they donated to serve kids in their after-school program. This same troop also heard what it’s like to live in underdeveloped countries and chose to use cookie money to purchase cows and chickens for families living abroad.

The cookie program also helps girls fund the fun and adventure for their Girl Scout troop all year long. Girls use cookie money for movie nights, summer camp and trips to Great Wolf Lodge, Hershey Park, Build-A-Bear, Triple R Ranch and Savannah.

During the past year, Suffolk Girl Scouts have also used cookie money to go dolphin watching and finance their Bronze Award community-service projects.

So your purchase often goes back into supporting our community and local businesses and Girl Scouts are given opportunities they might not have experienced otherwise.

When it comes to finding Girl Scout Cookies near you, there’s an app for that! Visit girlscoutcookies.org to find cookie booths in your area. We’re also excited that this year, Girl Scouts in our area can take credit cards at their cookie booths, which run through March 20.

So, remember, when you say “yes” to a box of Thin Mints, you’re supporting the largest girl-led business in the world.
