Doris Powell Powell, 89, passed on into eternal life on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016.

She was born in Nansemond County, the daughter of the late Chesley Rice Powell and Mary Balzora Boyce Powell. She retired in 1989 after 25 years of service as a supervisory clerk for the Suffolk Public Health Department. Doris was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, where she attended the Gray Memorial Class and formerly served as an organist and Sunday school teacher. She was a charter member of the Methodist Women’s Club, the Suffolk Home Demonstration Club and the King’s Fork Women’s Club for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Suffolk Christian Business and Professional Women’s Club, where she also played the piano. She served with the Suffolk Meals on Wheels.

Doris was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Rufus Edward Powell. She is survived by her children, Carol Powell Phelps, Chesley Powell and his wife, Beverly; grandchildren, Christopher Thomas Hearn and his wife, Allison, Corey Edward Hearn and his wife, Kara, Leigh-Ann Phelps Blount and her husband, Nick; and great-grandchildren, Meredith Powell Hearn, Celia Naugher Hearn, Chesley Thomas Hearn, Callie Elaine Hearn, Paul Harrison Hearn, Jesse Thomas Hearn, Cadence Zariah Blount and Ezra Warren Blount.

A celebration of life service will be held Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Garland Hines officiating. Friends may join the family for a visitation one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. The burial will be held at 2 p.m. at Holly Lawn Cemetery.
