The Nansemond River High School girls’ track and field team took home its second consecutive indoor regional championship on Wednesday.

The Lady Warriors won the Region 4A South indoor title last year and the Region 5A South indoor title this year at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.

To claim the regional crown in 2016 in a field of 23 schools that produced points, Nansemond River piled up 114, putting it well beyond second-place Maury High School, which had 77 points.

“I think that it’s exciting for the building process of our program,” NR coach Justin Byron said. “One of the major keys is that a lot of athletes that last year were not able to compete on the regional level are now contributing points, and I think that’s really good for team morale.”

The Lady Warriors produced winners in three individual events and one relay event.

Senior Brandeé Johnson won two individual events, including the girls’ 55-meter dash, in which she produced a personal and meet record time of 7.11 seconds in the preliminary heat and then beat that with a 7.07-second time in the final.

She also won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet and 1.75 inches.

Junior Syaira Richardson won the 300-meter dash, finishing in 40.55 seconds.

Byron noted Richardson also produced a personal record time of 7.27 seconds in the 55 prelims.

Nansemond River’s girls’ 4×400-meter relay team was victorious with a 4:05.38 time. The squad featured freshman Tre’Breh Scott-McKoy, sophomore Skylar Parks, senior Kiara Price and junior Anaya Monroe.

Byron highlighted the performance of Parks, who twice produced personal records during the 55-meter hurdles. Going in with a seed time of 8.52 seconds, she finished the preliminary heat in 8.45 seconds and then finished the final in 8.44 seconds, good for third place.

She also entered the 300 with a 42.06-second seed time and finished in fourth with a new PR of 41.63 seconds.
