Dorothy W. Darden

Dorothy Williams Darden “Dot,” 91, peacefully went to be with the Lord Feb. 21, 2016, in her home surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Texanna G. and Marvin E. Williams. She was predeceased by her brother, Jim Williams.

Dot was a lifelong Suffolk native and member of Suffolk Christian Church. She graduated from Suffolk High School in 1943 and attended Elon College. She was a homemaker and very active in community and her children’s activities; she volunteered for many years as a den mother for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, PTA, Red Cross, Obici Hospital and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Junto Women’s Club, D.A.R. and the Eastern Star. Dot was a Potentate’s First Lady Khedive Temple Shrine, 1985. She traveled the world with her husband and retired to live at their “Retreat on Crooked Creek.”

She leaves behind her husband David “Buddy” A. Darden of 70 years; they married in 1946 on Valentine’s Day; five children, Betty Lynn (Tom), David Jr. (Janie), Jack (Sandee), Dwight (Julie) and Bill (Bruce); nine grandchildren, Trip, Trent, Miranda, Chris, Meredith, Zach, Adam, Ashley and Jared; 12 great-grandchildren; and siblings Marvin Williams Jr. and Eleanor Hahne.

A celebration of life service will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Suffolk Christian Church, with the Rev. Michael D. Halley officiating. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., is serving the family. A private burial will be held prior to the service. The family would like to thank Home Sweet Home and Heartland Hospice for their love and support.
