Sylvester Henry McIlwain

Sylvester Henry McIlwain, 69, affectionately known as “Slim,” passed away on Monday, March 7, 2016, at his residence. He was born on Nov. 8, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late James H. McIlwain and Gladys Johnson-McIlwain. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stephanie McIlwain.

Sylvester was a faithful member of Noble Street Baptist Church.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 12 years, Shelia L. McIlwain, of Portsmouth; two sons, Christopher McIlwain, of Norfolk, and Tony McIlwain (Aimee), of Temple, Texas; one daughter, Leading Lady Sheranda Outlaw (Bishop Brian Outlaw Sr.), of Suffolk; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five sisters-in-law; a special cousin, Lena Wilson, of New York; two devoted friends, Thomas and Charlene Ridley; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. McIlwain’s visitation is noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the funeral home. A celebration of life service will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Noble Baptist Church, 100 Noble St., Portsmouth. The Rev. Henry P. Jones will be the eulogist. He will be laid to rest at Green Lawn Cemetery.
