A Suffolk man was sentenced Friday to 45 years in prison for sex crimes.

John David Street, 53, of the 700 block of Turlington road, pleaded guilty in June to five counts related to molesting a girl when she was 10 to 12 years old. The incidents happened in 2001 through 2003.

Prosecutor Marie Walls said the victim did not report the incidents until after she became an adult. She “still struggles with the trauma today,” Walls said. “It is beyond hard (for her) to trust anyone.”

Walls also said Street has not fully taken responsibility for his actions. He pleaded guilty on the morning his jury trial was supposed to start.

In addition, Street’s father, James Street, who testified on behalf of his son Friday, said he believes the incidents were partly the responsibility of the victim.

“He still deflects responsibility and blames the victim,” Walls said, referring to a doctor’s evaluation of Street. “You heard his father today. He blames the victim in part for what happened.”

Circuit Court Judge Robert H. Sandwich Jr. said Street “performed the most heinous and egregious crime imaginable against a child.”

“Children have enough difficulty in the world as it is today,” Sandwich continued. “It’s just unfathomable to me.”

Street was sentenced on one count of aggravated sexual battery, one count of indecent liberties and three counts of object sexual penetration.
