WGU graduates three locals
The following local residents have received their degree from Western Governors University. The university held its 30th semi-annual commencement ceremony in
Orlando on Feb. 6 and celebrated the graduation of more than 7,300 graduates.
- Amy Hommell, of Suffolk, received her Bachelor of Science in information technology.
- Christie Leyh, of Suffolk, received her Bachelor of Science in business management.
- Katrina Griffin, of Windsor, received her Bachelor of Science in nursing.
Bowe named Who’s Who
Calvin Bowe, a junior criminal justice major from Suffolk, has been named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” by Chowan University
Chowan annually participates in the national Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges program as a way of recognizing the outstanding achievement of Chowan students. The university looks for students who have excelled in the classroom and who have expanded their college experiences by being active in campus and community projects and events.
Students are first nominated by members of the faculty and staff. Using specific requirements, the nominations are then reviewed by the Honors Committee. These requirements include: junior or senior status, scholarship ability with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better, active participation and leadership in academic and extra-curricular activities, citizenship and service to the university, and potential for future achievement.
The Honors Committee selected 27 students for inclusion this year. The honorees were presented with a certificate at the Who’s Who Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, March 2 in Turner Auditorium.
Bowe has attained a number of awards and accomplishments, including: Alpha Phi Sigma Vice President, President’s List, Honors College, Dean’s List, Leadership Scholar, Honor College Outstanding Junior Award, Alpha Chi Honor Society National Convention Presenter, Honors College 1848 Award, Alpha Chi Honor Society, Honors College Student Association Public Relations Officer, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society Secretary, Brown Lady Academic Bowl Team, Criminal Justice Tutor, Relay for Life, Commencement Marshal, Criminal Justice Club Vice President, People of Progress SGA Representative and Presidential Ambassador.
