Take a walk in the park

The benefits of regular walking can’t be overstated.
People who walk regularly have lower blood pressure, a more healthy weight, healthier muscles (including their heart!), better bone density, healthier joints, better sleep, a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes and many more benefits.
There are benefits for your emotional health, too. Walking, especially outside, also improves mood and reduces stress. Outside walking allows people to get fresh air and enjoy the natural beauty of our area.
Walking with friends provides all of the above benefits plus an enjoyable social experience.
So the question is, why not walk?
The folks who come out to celebrate National Walk in the Park Day on March 30 will be answering with their feet. Locally, the Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community, Suffolk on the Move, Obici Healthcare Foundation and Suffolk Parks and Recreation have planned an event to encourage folks to come out and walk in the park.
At Lake Meade Park at noon that day, everyone is welcome to come and take a jaunt along one of the trails that meander through the park. It is non-competitive, and there are no age restrictions or minimum number of laps. It’s just a day to walk and enjoy.
The event lasts from noon to 2 p.m., but attendees should register by noon for a chance to win a Fitbit, gift cards and other prizes. The drawing will be held around 1 p.m., and walkers must be present to win.
But the real prize is that you’ll be doing something that improves your health, your mood and your relationships with those you walk with. You might even meet a new friend. What could be better than that?
The park is located behind the North Main Street Farm Fresh at 201 Holly Lawn Parkway. Call 539-1525 for more information. The event is rain or shine, unless the weather is really foul.
