‘Mud Jam’ planned

Trucks big and small will get muddy on April 16 at the Suffolk Executive Airport.

The Mud Jam will be presented by Suffolk Festivals, the folks who hold the Peanut Festival at the same site. The event will be a fundraiser for Peanut Fest, executive director Lisa Key said.

“We are excited,” Key said. “We haven’t done a second event in many years. We’ve got this nice arena out here, and we’re ready to do something else.”

The event will feature Big Daddy Motorsports, which also presents the truck pull during the October festival. Owner Ken Whitley said big trucks will be coming from all over the country, but locals are invited to enter, as well.

“It’s going to be for anybody that wants to run their truck,” Whitley said. Street-legal vehicles are welcome, and everybody will be separated into different classes based on their trucks.

“We’ve got some of the biggest, baddest trucks from all over the country coming,” Whitley said. “It’s from street class to unlimited, anything-goes class.”

Different courses will be available for different classes. Larger trucks will be able to jump over obstacles, while street class trucks have a somewhat tamer — but still muddy — course.

A safety technician will check all trucks for safety, and a helmet is required for drivers.

“If they don’t have (a helmet), we pass one around,” Whitley said.

Whitley said there was an exhibition on Sunday during last year’s Peanut Fest, and the crowd showed there was a lot of interest in the area.

“I was shocked at the amount of people that came out,” he said. During the events he runs in Moore’s Corner, N.C., about 60 to 70 percent of the license plates are from Virginia, he said.

The Mud Jam site will open at 9 a.m. on April 16. While the competition doesn’t start until 1 p.m., early birds will get a chance to see the trucks up close and meet the drivers.

The competition will last until about 6 p.m.

Spectator tickets are $15 per person, with children 6 and under free. The event will take place rain or shine.
