Mutt Strut coming up

The Suffolk Humane Society’s signature fundraiser is coming up May 1 and features some changes in the event, and the society is currently registering walkers for the pledge walk.
“We’re really trying to encourage people to sign up for the walk, because that’s where we generate most of our funding from,” said Eileen Gizara, executive director for the Suffolk Humane Society.
New this year, the pledge walk will actually be a mile-long walk. Previously, participants simply made as many laps as they felt like doing.
“This is actually going to have a start and an end,” Gizara said.
Individuals or teams can register for the walk online at shsmuttstrut.dojiggy.com. The cost is $15 for each person. There will be prizes for top individuals and top teams, including an iPad Mini for the top overall fundraiser and a pizza party for up to 12 people at Sal’s for the top team.
Human pledge walk participants usually bring their pooches along on a leash or walk in honor of their cat or in memory of a beloved pet.
In addition to the pledge walk, the event includes a number of activities and games, entertainment, vendors, adoptable animals and more available.
“It’s a good way for the community to get together,” Gizara said. “It’s family-friendly. There’s going to be lots of things to shop for and new vendors. It’s something the whole family can really do.”
The event also features a change of venue this year. After seven years at Sleepy Hole Park and YMCA Camp Arrowhead, the event will take place at Bennett’s Creek Park, located at 3000 Bennetts Creek Park Road.
“It’s just for something different,” Gizara said. “It’s a little bit smaller of a park, but there’s a neighborhood right there with a lot of families that I think will have a really nice time coming out.”
