Nansemond River High School senior guard/forward Aneka Yelverton made the all-region second team for the third year in a row.

She received the honor as a sophomore and junior while the Lady Warriors were a part of the 4A South region. The 2015-16 season was the first season in which they competed in the 5A South region.

Nansemond River coach R. Calvin Mason Sr. said he was hoping she would be voted to the first team this year, but he understood that the competition for honors was stiff.

“In 5A South, there was a lot of good teams and players, so the fact that she was able to make second team was still a great accomplishment,” he said.

Yelverton averaged 17.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 steals during the season while shooting 80 percent at the free throw line.

She finished her high school career with a total of 1,202 points, which is a new Nansemond River girls’ basketball record, eclipsing Jocelyn Williams’ total of 1,136.

“It’s a great individual accomplishment,” Mason said, noting Yelverton distinguished herself with her outstanding work ethic.
