The Suffolk Democratic Committee will honor three community heroes during its eighth annual Community Hero Luncheon on April 30.

Jean Copeland, Beverly Outlaw and Ronald Williams are this year’s honorees.

“For us, it’s more of a community service,” said Leslie Rinaldi, chair of the committee. “We don’t feel like people in Suffolk are really recognized for the good works they do in Suffolk. We like to kind of point out and make mention of those, we call them, ‘unsung heroes,’ people who do selfless acts continuously in our community outside of their regular jobs.”

Copeland has been the treasurer of the Suffolk Democratic Committee for many years. She volunteers to work the polls on Election Day and has served on the Paul D. Camp Community College board and as president of the Holy Neck Civic League.

Outlaw serves on the Suffolk Electoral Board. Her volunteer service includes work with the Suffolk Exchange Club to raise money for the prevention of child abuse.

Williams, the city treasurer, has raised more than $300,000 for local agencies such as the Genieve Shelter, Western Tidewater Free Clinic and the Suffolk Education Foundation through his annual Treasurer’s United Way Golf Tournament. He has held leadership roles in many local organizations, including the Suffolk Art League, Suffolk Lions Club and Suffolk Retail Merchants Association.

Rinaldi said nominations were taken from Suffolk residents, and a selection committee chooses the honorees each year. This year’s honorees are worthy, she added.

“They’ve been staples in our community for a while,” she said.

The luncheon will take place at noon April 30 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 100 E. Constance Road. A link to purchase tickets is available at www.suffolkian.com. Tickets are also available from committee members, but no tickets will be sold at the door.
