Tour champions to be honored

With less than a week to go before the 2016 Hampton Roads Tour de Cure in Suffolk, events are gearing up to celebrate the Tour.
One event exclusively for top fundraisers is the Champions Reception, which will take place the night before the ride at the Hilton Garden Inn on East Constance Road.
Champions to Stop Diabetes are those who have raised at least $1,000 in the months leading up to the ride. The reception, from 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, will treat them to a pasta dinner and live music by Brandon Jeffries. They’ll also be able to pick up their race packets at the event.
“Funds raised by champions directly impact some of our most important work,” Robin Kantor of the American Diabetes Association wrote in an email about the reception.
In addition to prevention and management education the association does, and research about causes, prevention, management and — hopefully — an eventual cure funded by the association, funds raised by the association help train school personnel to keep children with diabetes safe at school, provide assistance to individuals who are being discriminated against because of their diabetes, provide support to people newly diagnosed, and more.
“The impacts they make are felt far and wide,” Kantor wrote.
The 2016 Hampton Roads Tour de Cure will take place April 30, beginning and ending at King’s Fork High School. The route options are 10, 25, 65 or 100 miles.
There is a $30 registration fee and a $200 fundraising minimum. The fundraising goal is $450,000; so far about $251,000 has been raised.
