Courtney Telles was playing international soccer in elementary school, thanks to her dad’s military career.
The soon-to-be Nansemond River High School graduate grew up on the game of soccer no matter where she lived. After being born in Iceland, she moved to Florida with her family, where she was living when she started playing soccer at 3 years old. She later lived in Spain for about two and a half years, hence her international status.
Soon, Telles will play soccer for Lynchburg’s Randolph College, following her signing ceremony Thursday at Nansemond River, where she has been in the soccer program since eighth grade and plays forward.
Telles said her choice was between Randolph and Averett University. She went on overnight visits to both campuses.
“It was a very tough decision, because I loved both programs,” she said. “I felt more comfortable with Randolph. I felt more at home.”
Her parents, Lisa and George Telles, said soccer is in the family’s blood. George Telles played in high school and in the military and has coached his children since they were young.
“This is a big accomplishment for her as a senior,” said Nansemond River coach Kurt Straub. “We’re all proud of her, obviously.”
Telles plans to major in physical therapy at Randolph, which has a Division III sports program.
