Trailing 4-1 to Alliance Christian High School on Monday, Isle of Wight Academy came to bat with only three outs standing between them and a loss to the Falcons, who had only one Metro Conference win in six tries on the year.

Alliance Pitcher Alex Williams came on in relief of starter Jonathan Nagle, who had scattered seven hits in six innings of work. Three outs were all he needed for a save.

With one out, IWA shortstop Jacob Mintz walked, and Austin Elledge followed with a single. James Ricks then struck out for the second out.

Catcher Dylan Robertson reached on an error, sending Mintz to third and Elledge to second. Alec Wonders walked, scoring Mintz.

One batter later, Ryan Boyce was hit by a pitch, scoring Elledge. Aidan Williams also walked, scoring Robertson to even the score at 4-4.

With the bases loaded, the Falcons’ pitcher attempted a pickoff throw that got away from their first baseman, allowing Wonder to score the winning run.

Elledge led the way for the Chargers, with three hits, and started the game. Wonders, Boyce and Williams each received an RBI for their walk-drawing acumen in the seventh inning. Williams also earned the win in relief, pitching four innings, allowing a run and scattering four hits.

Nagle did not figure in the decision, but struck out nine Chargers.

IWA, expected to be the top-ranked team in this week’s VISAA Division III baseball poll, runs its record to 6-2 in the conference, 13-5 overall.

Alliance dropped to 9-10, 1-6 in the conference.
