Suffolk firefighters made a rescue of a different color on Sunday morning, when they rescued a horse stuck in a ditch.

A citizen found the 1,200-pound mare stuck in the muddy ditch in the 5300 block of O’Kelly Drive at 8:22 a.m. The horse was on her side with her legs wrapped around low-lying tree branches and trunks. She had been there for an unknown period of time and had visible injuries to her legs, according to a city press release.

Medics and Technical Rescue Team members assisted the horse’s owner with supplies in order to provide medications to the horse as ordered by the veterinarian, who had been called by the owner and was on his way to the scene. Crews removed nearby trees to clear an area around the horse.

Crews used webbing and hooks connected to a tractor to pull the horse from the ditch and into the field. Crews then assisted in rolling the horse to her other side in order to improve blood flow, according to the press release.

After several minutes, the vet and family were able to get the mare back on her feet.
