The Nansemond River High School boys soccer team beat Hampton High School 4-0 on Tuesday while improving their home record to 5-1.

The victory makes NRHS 9-3 overall, ranked second in the 5A conference. The home wins for the Warriors continue to pile up, and Coach Dustin Tordoff believes familiarity with the field has something to do with the victories.

“At home we go through a routine and we know the dimensions of the field,” he said. “Home field advantage is good.”

The first part of the game had minimal scoring as the only goal came from the Warriors’ Sterling McGee. The second goal came after the half from Nazir Marrero, giving Nansemond River a little bit of breathing room down the stretch. That outcome was described by Tordoff as being a pivotal point in the game.

“This was Nazir’s first goal of the season and it gave us cushion,” said Tordoff. “The whole team was excited for him because he worked so hard.”

The next two points would come from Brayan Morales and David Miller. Morales had a good game, creating space while also switching positions from time to time. Tordoff said the team had a strong game in the midfield, where Maliq Webster assisted Morales’ goal.

The Warriors goalie, Zack Busch, also had a good night, not allowing the Crabbers any points.

“We’ve beaten quality opponents at home this year,” Tordoff said.

NRHS has another home game against Warwick High School on May 13, and Tordoff believes they will be playing against strong competition.

“Warwick is a good team and it will also be our senior night, so the seniors should be ready to go.”
