An 86-year-old Suffolk woman died in a crash in Carrollton Thursday morning.
Annie Mae Eley, of the 1000 block of Centerbrooke Lane, was in the back seat of a 2006 Pontiac when it was struck by a 2006 Peterbilt tractor-trailer on Brewers Neck Boulevard at Carrollton Boulevard, according to a news release from Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.
The crash happened about 8 a.m., Anaya stated in a press release. The Pontiac was stopped at the stoplight when it was struck by the tractor-trailer, and the chain reaction caused a 2002 Jeep Wrangler and a 2004 Toyota Camry, also stopped at the light, to become involved.
Eley was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, Anaya said. She was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she died of her injuries. Four other individuals were transported with injuries not deemed life threatening.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Ronnie Butner, of North Carolina, was charged with reckless driving. Other charges may be pending, depending on the case review by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Anaya stated.
