The grand jury on Monday indicted a Suffolk man on 28 felony charges, including attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer.
Kevon Cornell Hawkins faces the charges in connection with a residential burglary and three armed robberies of businesses in January, as well as his rather eventful arrest at a downtown hotel in the week following the incidents.
After police developed Hawkins as a suspect in two of the robberies, they learned he was staying at a hotel in the downtown area with an adult female acquaintance, according to a city press release issued at the time of his arrest.
On Jan. 12, they began checking downtown hotels and found the female acquaintance was a registered guest at the Super 8 Motel in the 600 block of North Main Street.
When officers knocked on the door a second time after receiving no response the first time, they “heard what sounded like a round being chambered into a firearm,” according to the press release.
The SWAT team was called, and the female eventually came out of the room uninjured. Officers then heard several gunshots from within the room, and Hawkins crawled out with a self-inflicted gunshot wound under his chin. A firearm was located within the room.
Hawkins’ next court date on the charges is July 1. He was one of 48 defendants indicted on 148 charges Monday. The full grand jury report is below.
