Nansemond River High School’s football team started the season off in explosive fashion Friday with a 63-0 win over Menchville High School.

The Warriors got contributions all around the board as the team rushed for 471 yards. NRHS led 26-0 after the first quarter, which was up to 49-0 by halftime. Coach David Coccoli was proud of his team’s effort.

“Good start to the season to get that type of win,” he said. “We still have to improve and continue to get better.”

Standout JeVon Waller led the team with 130 yards on just four carries and one touchdown. Senior Daniel Moore followed with 93 yards on four carries. Anthony Oliphant Jr. added 70 yards on five carries. DyQuan McGhee led the team with two touchdowns.

Before Friday’s game, Coccoli said he wanted to establish the run game, stop their running game and get a win. The Warriors completed every phase of their game plan as Menchville was unable to put points on the board.

“I’m just glad we are playing well,” the coach said. “Our running game did a good job hitting the holes. We were efficient on offense and on defense.”

NRHS will enjoy the win for right now, but Coccoli knows they have to get back to work, as they face an Oscar Smith team that lost Friday.

“We have Oscar Smith coming here next,” Coccoli said. “This win can be used as a building block, but we have to turn right back around and get focused again.”

Regardless of a shutout and a 50-plus point performance, the Warriors want to continue to get better on special teams and in the secondary.

Next for the Warriors is a home date with powerhouse Oscar Smith at Nansemond River Sept. 2, 7 p.m.
