Canaan Baptist Church will host a popular gospel quartet next week for its gospel concert. Maurice Yancey and One Accord will perform at 7 p.m. Sept. 9.

The church’s male choir, Saints for Joy, will open for the band.

Yancey, who is good friends with the church’s pastor, Vernon Hairston Sr., was more than happy to perform at Canaan.

“Whenever your friends call, you try to be there for them,” Yancey said.

Yancey’s quartet, nominated for a Stellar Award in 2015, has created a lot of buzz at the church and community.

“Everybody is excited,” Hairston said.

Yancey’s band has decided to do a live recording for its single, “Promise I’ll Tell,” for its upcoming album.

“We are hoping that the spirit of God will be taking off in the place,” Yancey said.

Based in Portsmouth, Yancey founded the group in October 2008 but has had a passion for singing since he was 5 years old.

“The Lord called me to do what I wanted to do,” he said.

The band has performed at churches and venues around the nation, but often perform close to home.

Hairston and Yancey expect more than 100 people to attend the concert.

“We want the community to come and enjoy good music,” Hairston said.

The concert is open to the community, and tickets are $10 apiece. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 538-1841 or at the door. The doors open at 6 p.m.
