Just as the weather is cooling down, the chili is heating up in support of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The third annual Chili Cook-off by Lake Prince Woods in support of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place at 4 p.m. Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn, 100 E. Constance Road.

Returning champions Harper’s Table will be among the seven competitors, along with newcomers Mason’s Grill and Steakhouse and Derl’z and returning challengers Baron’s Pub, Constant’s Wharf Grill and Lake Prince Woods. Retired firefighter Arthur Barrett will also participate.

Denise Brown, director of resident services at Lake Prince Woods, said the chili cook-off is a fun event with a competitive edge.

“It’s getting competitive,” she said. “The participants who are coming to taste the chili are the ones voting on the winner, so if you’ve got a favorite restaurant that’s participating, you might want to come support them.”

But more important, Brown said, the event is a fundraiser for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Several varieties of chili will be available, and folks can wash down their samples of the hot stuff with tea and lemonade, along with enjoying dessert provided by Lake Prince Woods.

“We can guarantee they will get to taste lots of different kinds of chili,” Brown said.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Raffle tickets for a Toyota RAV4 also will be sold at the event for $5 each.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set for Sept. 17 at Constant’s Wharf, 110 E. Constance Road. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the opening ceremony at 9:40 a.m. and the walk and 10 a.m. Sponsor tables, coffee and light refreshments, a promise garden and more will be available.

Participants have the option to take a one- or three-mile loop through downtown Suffolk. At the end of the event, they can purchase lunch from the Karnage Asada food truck, which will donate a portion of sales that day to the Alzheimer’s Association.
