From chicken to prime rib, red to green and two-alarm to 10-alarm, a variety of chili was available at Friday’s chili cook-off to support the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Lake Prince Woods hosted the event for the third year, and it was held at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront.

The chili ranged from the simple to the extreme.

Donna Perry of Derl’z came with a simpler recipe — mostly just ground beef and spices. She said it reminded her of the way her parents and grandparents would have made it.

On the other end of the spectrum, Mason’s Grill and Smokehouse chef Shacoa Black made a smoked chipotle chicken chili with avocado sour cream.

“I knew there was going to be a lot of beef chili, so I wanted it to be spicy but different,” she said.

Retired firefighter Arthur Barrett brought two-alarm and 10-alarm varieties of his chili and, like many competitors, offered cheese and sour cream as toppings. Other competitors served theirs with bread, crackers or chips.

Jessica Purser, a chef at Baron’s Pub, filled her recipe with beef tenderloin, prime rib and ground beef.

“I wanted it to be good and hearty,” she said.

Guests washed down their chili with lemonade, tea and dessert.

Attendees voted on their favorite recipes, and the top four competitors were all separated by one vote each.

The winner was Harper’s Table, which offered the only green chili in the mix. Next came Barrett, followed by Baron’s Pub and Mason’s.

Denise Brown, director of resident services at Lake Prince Woods, said the event attracted 57 attendees and brought in about $400 in support of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The total included admission fees and raffle ticket sales.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set for Sept. 17 at Constant’s Wharf, 110 E. Constance Road. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the opening ceremony at 9:40 a.m. and the walk and 10 a.m. Sponsor tables, coffee and light refreshments, a promise garden and more will be available.

Participants have the option to take a one- or three-mile loop through downtown Suffolk. At the end of the event, they can purchase lunch from the Karnage Asada food truck, which will donate a portion of sales that day to the Alzheimer’s Association.
