A strong effort was not enough for the Lady Warriors as they took their first loss of the season on Wednesday.

The Lady Warriors lost 6-1 to Hickory High School, dropping them to 4-1 on the season. But they will continue to look to improve.

During the game, Nansemond River was without Victoria Czuprynski, a key asset to the back line.

“The score didn’t quite show our effort,” coach Allison Dize said. “I think our defense played well. Hickory is a good team.”

Captain Ashlyn Rogers felt that the absence of Czuprynski, as well as Hickory being at home, played in their opponents’ favor. Despite all circumstances, she sees her team improving.

“I think we looked good playing against them,” Dize said. “I see our team continuously getting better as we get further and further into the season.”

Next for the Lady Warriors is a game against Western Branch, and they are confident they can bounce back.

“We should be fine for next game,” senior Ariana Samuel said. “As long as we play the way we know how to.”

Junior Tori Chafian scored the only goal Wednesday evening for the Lady Warriors.

“As a team, we know that we are good and that we will ultimately lose games,” Rogers said. “We can’t let that affect us. We will come out stronger next game and ready to play.”

Nansemond River will be at Western Branch at 5:15 p.m. Sept. 12.
