Excitement is starting to surround the Lakeland High School community. For the second week in a row, the Cavs controlled the game and got a victory, putting them at 2-0 on the year.

Western Branch (0-2) was not able to match the home team’s energy, as the Cavs won 20-7.

“I’m happy for our guys,” coach Kevin Knight said. “Since January, these guys have been putting in work, and it’s starting to pay off. To start off 2-0 is a great feeling.”

Two wins into the new season, the Cavaliers has won more than half of the games they won last year. Confidence is building all around the team, and the players can see how far they have come since last season.

“We have come a long way,” running back Damontra Milteer said. “We are a stronger and older team. Coach Knight coaches us up to believe we have the talent to go as far as we want to go. We as players believe that we do.”

Milteer once again led the way for the Cavs, as he rushed 28 times for 164 yards. Quarterback Tyquan Holloman played a solid game as well, tossing two touchdowns through the air and rushing for 55 yards. Lakeland fed off the energy from the crowd and community.

“The city is so supportive. We love the energy they brought,” Knight said. “Last week at Wilson we had more of our fans show up there than theirs, and the weather was bad. They were loud, and they were cheering in the home opener. We love that.”

Knight likes the way Holloman has been playing poised under center for the Cavs. Holloman is letting the game come to him, and in the midst of that he is trusting his offensive line to help him make plays.

“Two games, no interceptions and no turnovers,” Knight said. “He is playing pretty good football right now.”

Knight feels one of his team’s strengths is the depth and competitiveness they have at the running back position. Sophomore running back Ricardo Ray scored a touchdown for the Cavs.

Defensively, the Cavs have only allowed one offensive touchdown in two games.

“Our defense is playing well,” Knight said. “We have been stingy the last two games. We want those shutouts.”

LHS will take each game one week at a time. They don’t want to settle for just 2-0.

Next week, Lakeland will face its biggest challenge yet. The team goes on the road to face Oscar Smith at 7 p.m. Sept. 16.
