Nansemond River High School’s golf team is riding high after defeating Churchland 359-398 at the Riverfront Golf Club on Thursday. Though the Warriors felt it wasn’t their best game, they were happy to get the win.
“It wasn’t one of our better performances, but I’m glad we could get the win,” coach Brandon Frye said. “The course we were playing was difficult, but we adjusted.”

Justin McCarthy led the way for the Warriors with a score of 84. Considering the difficulty of the course Thursday afternoon, it speaks well of McCarthy’s confidence that he was able to play so well.
“He is showing great progress,” Frye said. “He is asserting himself and it’s coming with good timing, as the conference tournament will be soon.”
“I think I played well yesterday,” McCarthy said on Friday. “There’s always something to work on, so I’m going to continue to strive to be better.”
The conference tournament will be Sept. 26 and 27 at the Hamptons Golf Course. After their recent two wins, the Warriors want to continue improving.
“We have about a week or so to prepare, and I feel pretty good about the kids,” Frye said. “We have played well recently, but the big test comes up here soon. I don’t want significant changes to the way they have been playing. I just want them to prepare by playing as much as they can.”
For the most part, the Warriors golfers are close in scores, which makes them confident about how well they can do in the conference tournament.
“We have all improved since last year,” McCarthy said. “Each match, we have found a way to improve, which helps us going forward. I think we are confident.”
