A local organization that helps people experiencing homelessness or job loss get back on their feet will have a fundraiser this weekend to support its efforts.

The Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk fundraiser will feature barbecue, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, hush puppies and more.

CAPS is a coalition of local churches that offers help with emergency assistance including utility bills, rent deposits and connections to local resources.

The program also offers financial counseling to help Suffolk residents get and stay on their feet, as well as the Night Stay program, which offers a warm place to get dinner and sleep during the winter months at local churches.

Cheryl Griffin said Saturday’s fundraiser will include not only food catered by Captain Bob’s but also entertainment.

The Hiz Handz Puppets will perform, and there will be an open mic for performers. There will be lawn games, and a bake sale will also raise additional funding.

“It’s going to be like a family day type thing,” Griffin said. “It’s not just coming and eating.”

The fundraiser will take place at Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church, 3488 Godwin Blvd. Pick-up is from 3 to 4 p.m., and dine-in is from 4 to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Westminster or at Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N. Main St., or at capsuffolk.org. There will be two satellite pick-up locations — West End Baptist Church and the Kroger Marketplace in North Suffolk.
