Shrimp Feast returns

Some changes are in store for this year’s annual Shrimp Feast, but the important things are still the same.

There will be shrimp, barbecue and all the fixings during the Oct. 6 event. There will be entertainment. There will be beer. And tens of thousands of dollars raised from the event will be donated to local organizations.

The Suffolk Ruritan Club produces the event each year and then takes the proceeds and uses them for many events throughout the year, most notably the veterans’ appreciation that takes place every spring. The other donations go to organizations like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, King’s Kids and more.

“Come on out and eat all the shrimp you can,” said E.C. Harris of the Suffolk Ruritan Club.

That’s the first change this year — the shrimp is once again all-you-can-eat, if you’re eating on site.

The second change is that no tickets will be sold at the gate; they must be purchased in advance.

The third change is a slight bump in the ticket price, which is now $35.

“Everything costs so much,” Harris said, explaining the price increase.

“We still operate on the same budget we have the last 30 years,” said Jimmy Franks, a Ruritan member. “All your money goes back into the community.”

And the fourth change is that the Shrimp Feast area has been moved near the main stage in order to help out with logistics, Harris said.

Since this year’s Peanut Fest is charging admission, Shrimp Feast attendees get an extra boost; they get in free on Thursday with their Shrimp Feast ticket.

Coupled with the 2,500 pounds of shrimp and 1,200 pounds of barbecue will be entertainment by Celeste Kellogg and Childz Play.

Tickets are available for purchase at Bennett’s Creek Pharmacy, Virginia Commonwealth Bank, Line-X of Suffolk, Cross Realty, BB&T Bank on Route 58, Ricky and Roy’s, Mike Duman Auto Sales, Suffolk BBQ, Quality Cleaners, Xenith Bank, Citizen’s Bank in Windsor, Ricky’s Carts, Major Signs, Aamco Transmissions, City of Suffolk Tourism, Carts Unlimited and Grafic Trenz.
