Suffolk’s golf teams are ready for the conference tournament and hoping to place for regionals.
Nansemond River High School, Lakeland High School, and King’s Fork High School will compete in their respective conference tournaments next week. The Bulldogs finished fourth last year in their conference tournament and are optimistic about this year.
“Their core competencies are steadily improving, and that’s what we have been working on,” Bulldogs coach Calvin Mitchell said. “Their confidence in themselves has been improving. As long as we maintain a good strategy, we will be fine.”
The top two teams from the golf conference tournament will advance to the regionals, and six additional players from any school can be chosen to advance. Last year, the Bulldogs had three players advance to the regionals.
“The goal is to get six players in,” Mitchell said. “We know what we need to do to get there, and we are capable of doing it. Sometimes in golf, your mind gets ahead of your game.”
Practice time has been limited for each team due to weather, but the Warriors are still confident in their abilities.
“We have to continue to build on past experiences,” Warriors coach Brandon Frye said. “I’d like for my whole team to qualify.”
Last year, the Warriors had three qualify.
“It would be an honor for our whole team to go to regionals and represent NRHS,” Justin McCarthy said. “Just to represent Suffolk, in general, will be an honor.”
The Warriors will compete Sept. 26-27 at the Hamptons Golf Course, with a tee time of 9 a.m. The Bulldogs will compete at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course Sept. 27, with a tee time of 9 a.m.
