Apartment fire extinguished

Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded Friday night to a fire in a vacant apartment at the Suffolk Towers Apartments in the 100 block of North Main Street.

The fire was reported at 8:44 p.m. The fire was contained to a vacant apartment on the sixth floor, according to a city press release.

The building was evacuated, but all occupants were allowed to return after the fire was extinguished. No one was injured, and no one was displaced.

The cause of the fire was determined to be carelessly discarded smoking material, according to the release.
