Nansemond River High School’s boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams swept Heritage High School in straight sets at home on Tuesday.

The Lady Warriors were up first, taking care of the Lady Hurricanes in three sets.

In the first, the NRHS showed a lot of intensity, winning the set 25-10. Defensively the Lady Warriors stayed consistent throughout the evening, allowing just 10 points in two of the sets.

“The girls played well,” coach Robin Smith said. “I’m proud of the way they competed. To build on this win, we will need to continue to move our feet, communicating within the court and getting the ball down.”

Smith has also been impressed with the way her players have being using the skills they have practiced and with the way the team has been working together to keep the ball in control.

The boys’ team followed the girls’ lead with a stout effort.

Out of all the sets, the second seemed to be the toughest for the Warriors as they won it by just two points. After the second set, they quickly got themselves together, defeating the Hurricanes 25-9.

“We played well,” NRHS senior Matt Waterman said. “From start to finish, we were charismatic and energized.”

Both teams have a Conference 10 match at home against Menchville High School at home tonight.

“This game is critical,” Smith said. “This is what we have been practicing for. We are looking forward to trying to win the conference. We have to win at home. When we travel to play conference games, parents and fans don’t get to see us that much. When we get a chance to play at home, we want to do well.”

“We want to win this because we want to be ranked as high as possible,” Waterman said. “Going against the larger-populated school is always hard, mostly because of the size difference. However, we will play our best and try to get a win.”

The girls will play at 5 p.m., followed by the boys at 6:30 p.m.
