It seems like this year’s Relay for Life just concluded, but in reality it was almost five months ago.

That means it’s time to start gearing up for next year’s Relay, so the kickoff celebration is planned for next week to get everybody excited about the event.

“The kickoff is a great opportunity to get information about the new Relay season coming up,” said Tara Asare, community manager for Relay for Life. “We’re really excited.”

In keeping with the “kickoff” idea, everyone is welcome to wear their favorite sports jersey. It is football season, after all.

That’s not a clue to the theme for Relay 2017, Asare said. “People have to come to find out what it is.”

The theme for the Relay will be revealed at the event, along with useful information for Relayers new and returning.

“If you have already participated in Relay, it’s a great way to get your feet wet again,” Asare said. “It’s a great way to get everybody’s energy up, get everybody’s spirit up and get everybody pumped up for Relay.”

The kickoff will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hampton Inn, 1017 Centerbrooke Lane.
