A Suffolk man has been sentenced on charges he molested a young friend of the family for more than six years.

Francis Marion Monahan Jr., now 72, was sentenced to 30 years of active time by Circuit Court Judge L. Wayne Farmer.

The victim was between the ages of 8 and 14 during the time of the offenses, prosecutor Marie Walls said. The incidents happened in the 1990s.

Walls said Monahan started taking the youngster hunting and fishing. At first, Monahan showed the boy pornography “to show him what to do,” Walls said.

The abuse progressed to fondling, then to nudity and to sex acts.

The indictments against Monahan were unsealed in April 2015. He was ruled unfit for trial in August but restored to competency this year.

Monahan pleaded guilty to eight charges. A total of 83 charges were not prosecuted.
