Touch a truck on Saturday

As a kid, there are few things more exciting than the opportunity to touch and tour a fire truck, police car, dump truck, train caboose or maybe even the Planters NUTmobile — and also to get candy.
For adults, there are few things more exciting than a few hours of keeping the kids occupied on the cheap.
For nonprofit organizations, there are few things more exciting than a fundraiser that will bring in much needed money to help the organization stay operational.
All three of those things will combine this Saturday in the Touch a Truck, Train and Trick or Treat event. It happens from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum, 326 N. Main St. It will be a beautiful fall day, so there is no excuse not to go.
This is the fifth year of the Touch a Truck event being held by the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, which owns the train station. The event will support the operation of the train station.
It’s also the second year of trick-or-treating being held at the event. The event was originally held in early October, but rain last year forced the delay of the event until near Halloween. The organizers came up with the imaginative plan of allowing children to wear their costumes and handing out candy at each vehicle.
Perhaps one of the best things about the event is the chance for people to see the train station, which is one of the hidden-in-plain-sight gems of Suffolk. If you’ve never been in there — especially if you have small children or are a lover of history and all things Suffolk — you are truly missing out. We encourage you to go, either on Saturday or some other time very soon.
Tickets to Touch a Truck, Train and Trick or Treat are $5 each or four for $15. Children under 1 year old are free.
Call the train station at 923-4750 for more information.
