The Lady Saints picked up a 3-1 win at home on senior day to close out the regular season. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy had three different players score goals.
“We played awesome,” the Lady Saints’ Lauren Meyers said of her team’s effort. “The last couple games we really hadn’t been playing as well as we wanted to. However, we really stepped it up out there to make the win happen.”
“This win was crucial for us,” the Lady Saints’ Sam Williams said. “After losing two conference games in a row, we really needed this confidence boost. We have a big game next week, and this past win has finally gotten us back in our groove.”
NSA only has one senior, Paige Christiansen, on the roster. She was honored before the game. Christiansen is a five-year starter for the Lady Saints field hockey team and has played more than 98 games in her career. She’s been a team captain for the last two years and earned all team honors all five years. She earned second team all-conference honors as a freshman and sophomore and first team last year as a junior.
“The feeling out there was bittersweet,” Christiansen said of her last home game. “I have played varsity field hockey at NSA for five years, so it’s a strange feeling knowing that was the last time I will ever play on that field. This year’s team is a special one, and I am honored to have played my last season alongside such an amazing group of girls.”
Next, the Lady Saints will take on Cape Henry in the first round of the conference tournament, which starts Tuesday Nov. 1. The game will be held at Cape Henry. In both games played against Cape Henry, the Lady Saints have lost with scores of 0-2 and 0-3. Despite those outcomes, the Lady Saints are confident if they play their game it will give them a good chance to win. The Lady Saints finish the regular season with a 10-10 record.
“I look forward to the girls carrying this momentum over into next week’s conference tournament match,” NSA coach Ashley Skinner said.
“We have to keep our communication up on the field,” Abby Carlson said. “If we do that and continue to improve, we should be fine.”
