More than 500 Suffolk residents took advantage of a court-ordered extension of last week’s voter registration deadline.

Registrar Susan Saunders said there were 60,531 voters registered by Monday, the original deadline. On Saturday, there were 61,101. That made an increase of 570.

“Anytime we can get people registered to vote is always good,” Saunders said. “The end result is a good result.”

The federal court case was filed by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights after unprecedented web traffic, and the resulting issues it caused with the Virginia Department of Elections website, prevented many people from completing their registrations online before the original deadline.

A federal judge decided on Thursday to extend the deadline to 11:59 p.m. Friday.

Saunders said many people visited her office in person to register during the extension, but many more registered online.

Statewide, nearly 28,000 new voters registered online during the extension, and more registered in person, by mail and at Department of Motor Vehicles locations, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Elections.
