Cavs drop two straight after Indian River loss

A 33-9 loss to Indian River High School Friday night resulted in Lakeland High School’s second loss in a row, dropping them to 5-4 on the season.

After losing to Grassfield High School on the road last week, the Cavaliers traveled on the road to take on an Indian River team and lose in what the Cavs called a “disappointing effort.”

“We didn’t perform well at all out there,” Cavs coach Kevin Knight said. “I didn’t even see the same team. It wasn’t our best effort.”

At the end of the first quarter, the score was 13-3. The first quarter belonged to the Braves’ Johnathan Griffin. He had a receiving touchdown on the Braves possession, and he’d also put up the next first quarter touchdown for the Braves — a pick-six interception of Cavs quarterback Tyquan Holloman.

“We were prepared,” Knight said. “We didn’t see anything during the game that we didn’t see on film. We just didn’t execute. Our energy just wasn’t there.”

Trevon Claude scored the only touchdown on Friday night for the Cavs. Running back Damontra Milteer finished the night with only 86 yards on 21 carries. Holloman completed six passes for 95 yards. Nashun Overton had 171 all-purpose yards for the Cavs.

“I have to improve as a head coach,” Knight said. “It’s my job to make sure those guys are fired up and ready to play. I didn’t do that well enough this week. I have to be better as well as everyone else.”

Next for the Cavs is the regular season finale against Nansemond River. After back-to-back losses on the road, the Cavs will be returning home for their final game of the regular season.

“This will be one of the biggest games of the year,” Knight said about the game against Nansemond River. “It’s about the big rivalry game. We have a lot of history. Both schools were built the same year. It’s going to be a fun game. This is huge.”

The Cavs hope to put Friday’s loss behind them and finish the season on a good note. Lakeland will be at home against Nansemond River at 7 p.m. Nov. 4.
