After a long battle with heart disease, Spencer Mayfield Jr. departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The wake will be held on Friday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan St., Suffolk, VA 23434. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church Mahan Street. Viewing on Saturday will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., and the Omega Memorial Service will be from 10:15 to 11 a.m. at the church. The interment will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
Spencer Mayfield Jr. (affectionately known as “Spoogie”), a native of Suffolk, was born on June 21, 1938, to the late Spencer Mayfield Sr. and Lucille Shelton. Spencer graduated from Suffolk’s Booker T. Washington High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Elizabeth City State College (now University) and a master’s degree from Virginia State University in industrial arts education. Spencer also loved serving his community as a member of several social and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the Suffolk Booster Club, a Silver Life member of NAACP and Alpha Iota Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
Spencer is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Carolyn S. Mayfield; three daughters, Dr. Kerrita K. Mayfield, Karrin A. Mayfield and Dr. Kellie E. Mayfield; brothers, Spencer Lee Mayfield (Theaudry), Spencer Mayfield and Chris Shelton; and host of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his two sisters, Audrey Mae Jordan, Cheryl Shelton; and one brother, Charles Shelton.
